I can see so much personality in photos. What we plan for your session says a lot about you. Are we going to photograph downtown or in a field? Your answer reveals a lot. So, when it’s time to plan your session, you might want to think about adding a creative element that will make the session uniquely you. So here are some ways to add something creative to your session.
3 Ways To Add Something Creative To Your Session:
- Think About Something You Love.
A celebrity? Dance? Cooking? A show? There is so much creativity that you can pull from things that you love. Take a minute to think about anything, absolutely anything that you love.
I will be honest, I love Nurse Ratched on Netflix. I think the content is graphic and hard to watch, however the visual storytelling with colors, location, building, interiors, clothing, etc is absolutely stunning. That is so inspiring to me. I could study an episode just for its visual content.
Now, think about how that “thing” could translate to a picture. In the example here, Jade loves Taylor Swift’s music. When she turned 22 years old, she wanted a photoshoot that looked and felt like the 22 music video that Taylor created. (You can see the video HERE.)
- Be Prepared To Communicate What You Want To Your Photographer
If someone told me that they wanted a Nurse Ratched themed session I would need so much more information. Is it the location that you love the most? The outfits? Or is the moment when Nurse Ratched is having intense feelings and her surroundings turn red? There is so much to pick apart and dissect. We could see different things. If you don’t communicate what is the most important part to you, then I might completely think of something different, even though we are thinking about the same singular inspiration.
Jade did everything right when I said “add something creative to your session.” There are several parts to the 22 music video she was inspired by. But she picked one element. The part where Taylor Swift had on an iconic t-shirt and stood in front of a white wall.
- The Details Are Important.
I can tell you about sessions where someone says they want it to by XYZ themed and then show up with nothing that is XYZ. You have to actually follow through when you add something creative to your session. That means all of the details.
Jade did it perfectly because she found the t-shirt, shorts, bracelets, shoes, and sunglasses that the music video used. Because she showed me the pictures (and I was able to watch the music video, I knew the vision). I had the exact hat that was used in the video so I was able to contribute to the props too. We just had to find the perfect location.
All of those details matter when you add something creative to your session. You can not forget about the details. I will help you every step of the way, but you have to put in some effort too!
