Let me be real for a minute. These images were inspired by feeling authentic. Be authentic. Not polished. Not beautiful. Not clean. Not dry. Not caring what others think. Not doing it for likes. Not planning it out. The need to be authentic is in all of us, but do we really let it out? Are we paying attention to this need to be authentic? Sometimes I wish I listened to that voice more.
I love beautiful things …
I love beautiful, polished things. Surely I feel like my images reflect. Great hair and makeup is part of ALL of the images you see on my feed. Certainly, I need to be authentic too. I can be both of those things at the same time. Sometimes we need to be unpolished and dirty from the sand and wind-blown from the beach air. Our souls need this.
Above all, be authentic
Sometimes the need to be authentic outflanks the need to be polished. Do you agree? Or you do think being polished all the time is the best thing?
This session has been on my mind for a long time. I needed to have a senior roll around in the sand. I needed to do this.
I got inspiration for this authentic, storytelling session from Jolene Dombrowski, who I recently met at a conference. I don’t know if I saw beach images on her Insta, or blog or portfolio. I just remember being really moved by how authentic all of her images are. Consequently, I don’t actually follow a lot of senior photographers, however she is pretty amazing and sets the bar pretty high for all of us.
