Why is the Giving Gala Different This Year?
First, let’s talk about what our Giving Gala 2020 is, and why it is different this year, and of course we want to reveal our images! (You can see our previous Giving Gala images here.) Our Giving Gala aimed to be a fundraiser, to support our community, by raising money. As a result, we decided not to have the Giving Gala in person, so we are not raising money this year. Now it’s all about love, support and encouragement.
There is a very specific reason we did not have a physical Giving Gala 2020 this year. As the Governor of Michigan lifted registrations, we could meet in person. However, everyone would have to wear a mask. Certainly, the most special part about our Giving Gala reveal is that we see everybody’s expression when they see the image for the very first time. If you’re wearing a mask we wouldn’t be able to see your reaction to the photos. So we decided to do it just one at a time over Zoom, and record them in this video!
Our Kitschy World
These images were created in a world that we made up, together. We don’t want these images to necessarily look like any of our models. We want them to look Vogue-like. Each person has a story. We try to execute that story in their look. Each one of these images is a work of art. We don’t necessarily want them to look like themselves. It needs to look like a work of art.
Our inspiration comes from high fashion. These kitschy, tacky photos are full a creative explosion. We wanted to achieve something that is completely different to show beauty can arrive in any form. It’s in the eye of the beholder. These images were created so that you get a chance to see yourself differently. Art is beautiful. All of our girls are beautiful. We wanted them to be able to see that they are beautiful, even in the most kitschy, extravagant, different, weird, corky way.
Give Through Love
Since we are not making this into a fundraiser because we are not raising money through ticket sales, we decided the Giving Gala 2020 will mean something slightly different. The Giving portion will have a different meaning. We decided that with the release of the images, we want them to give support, love and encourage each other.
We hope that everyone who sees these images will do the same thing.
The Artistic Process
Part of the process that we have done for 5 years, is to pick an initial theme. This theme is central to everything to do. This year our theme was kitschy. Everything we created was hideous and we loved that idea. A lot of times I will come up with something and show it to Sarah. She will then say “okay, but add this!” Then I will take that idea and then I will say “okay and let’s add this too” until we morph this into something is a combination of both of our minds being creative together. That is so much fun for us to do every year.
Comment On The Images!
Go find all of these images on my social media (Facebook and Instagram). The point is that you need to give love, support and encouragement to the girls in the images! Tell them they are all beautiful works of art. Moreover, take it a step further and comment about what you like the most, what is your favorite thing, what caught your eye right away. Ultimately, not only for the girls will that be exciting to read, but for us as well. It will give us a glimpse into your imagination. Maybe apply those imaginative ideas in the future.
Oh, by the way. Sarah and I are wearing the same thing in the video. Unintentionally. Our brains are too similar.
Watch the bloopers at the end.
Make sure you share LOVE, SUPPORT and ENCOURAGEMENT for all the girls in the photos! Finally, you can do so by going to my Instagram HERE and commenting and liking the photos.
