Outfits for Your Senior Session Don’t Need to be Expensive if you know how and Where to shop (hint, hint, thrift store!)
Picking out an outfit or two for your senior photo session can be stressful and costly if you just go to the mall to find something to wear. With all the other expenses that you and your parents have to worry about this year, there is no need to add another one to the list. If you know how and where to shop, not only can you save a bunch of money, but you are guaranteed to wear an outfit that is as unique and beautiful as you are!
Thrift and Consignment Stores
When many people think of thrift stores, they think of the embarrassment that came with wearing their older siblings hand me downs and then completely dismiss the idea of trying to shop at a place that sells used clothing. Thankfully this image has changed a bit in the past few years, certainly with a little help from Macklemore and Ryan Lewis’ song Thrift Shop. Have you ever gone to the mall and saw a pair of jeans or a cable knit sweater that wee priced at $100 and wonder why something would cost so much? Me too. That doesn’t mean that I don’t want to own those type of clothes, it just means that I need to consider what I want to budget for each outfit. Lucky I discovered that a lot of the time these designer clothes end up in consignment stores, many times in close to perfect condition, for about 10% of the original price. Shopping at a thrift or consignment store isn’t just a great way to save money, but is also a fantastic way to find some unique and vintage pieces for an outfit that will make your senior photo session a success. As a matter of fact, it is pretty easy to walk into a thrift store in any part of the country, even Kalamazoo, Michigan and pick out a fashionable outfit for only $20. Here are a couple tips to help you keep your senior session outfit to $20 or less.
Fall and Spring
Luckily the perfect times of year for thrift store shopping also happen to be when the majority of people are having their senior pictures taken. If the leaves are changing color or the flowers are starting to bloom, then you will want to start searching the thrift stores for your senior outfits. This is because during these seasons many people are changing up their wardrobes and tend to donate things that no longer fit them, things they don’t like, or items that they just don’t wear.
The joy (and frustration) of shopping at a thrift store is that each item is unique. Finding exactly what you are looking for is like striking oil at times, and although they may have a big selection, you might not find your perfect outfit the first time you step into the store. Don’t worry though! The best thing about thrift stores (besides the prices) is that they are constantly getting donations and adding to their inventory. Don’t let one unsuccessful trip get you down, go back in a few days and you will have a whole new selection to choose from.
