Photography Education, Part II
I thought I would follow up to a blog post I did two weeks again, so this one is called Photography Education, Part II. Super creative, right? Not really, but I wanted to share a few images that I took a the PUSH conference last year.
Benefits of Photography Education
I think there are a lot of benefits of photography education.
- Meet with industry leaders
- Learn new tricks
- Photograph styled shoots
- Meet other photographers who are at the same stage of business that you are
- Push yourself out of your comfort zone
- Travel to a new location
- Learn new systems, ideas, concepts
I think it is really intimidating shooting with other senior photographs, so I actually have to really push myself to do this. But every conference I have attended I have taken at least a few shots. The styled shoots are set up so that you can physically watch and learn from photographers who do it well. Watching other photographers shot and give directions is way better, in my opinion, than actually photographing myself. There have been a handful of times when a photographer talks me through the “why” and the “how” and it has improved my skill by leaps and bounds.
This particular conference is where I met Nicole and Hanah in person for the first time. They are both super star photographers. We had met online in a group where we all were learning about model teams. We reached out to one another a day before the conference started to make sure that we would connect at the conference.
After the conference, I joined them in a group chat on Voxer and it has become a daily habit for us to check in with one another. I didn’t think that would be my favorite take-away from PUSH, but it actually was. I feel super connected to them. We joke that we can’t make business decisions without each other. But it’s not actually a joke. It’s true!
Is it worth the price tag?
That’s a difficult question to answer. These conferences are super expensive and I have to save up for them. You have to decide if the cost is worth it for you.
