If you are a junior in high school or have a daughter who is a junior in high school, it’s time to think about hiring a senior photographer. Let me break it down into a few simple steps so that you can get your session on the calendar.
Do Your Research
A simple Google search will help you start to find photographers in your area. I know that there seem to be a lot of photographers in every town, but you will want to look for a photographer who will work well with you. It’s always a good idea to find a photographer who has a specialty in the area that you need.
I’ve photographed everything under the sun, and 5 years ago I decided that I wanted to specialize in seniors because of a few reasons.
- I can connect with seniors on a personal level.
- I’m most excited when seniors are on my calendar.
- I have a good team around me that specifically understands the needs of seniors.
- My best work is senior photography.
There are ways to search for senior photographers other than Google. I think Instagram is a great avenue to do research. When you are looking through someone’s Instagram feed, you could ask yourself these questions:
- Is the feed current?
- Does this senior photographer know how to photograph someone who looks like me?
- Would I feel connected to this senior photographer while they’re photographing me?
After you find a senior photographer that you think will work well with you, is it easy to find a way to reach out to that photographer?
- Is there a contact page on the website?
- Is there a phone number or email on the Instagram bio?
- Can you connect through text, phone call, or email?
I have actually heard clients say that they booked me because I was the only photographer that answered the phone. If a photographer is difficult to connect with, move on. You may really love that person’s work, but if it is difficult to get a response then it may be difficult to get your images. I have had clients say that they have worked with other photographers, and they still came to me because they never received their images from the first photographer. Avoid all of those types of scenarios by working with someone who is willing to communicate from the very beginning.
Once you find the right photographer, don’t hesitate and wait to book your session. When a photographer is well known for what they do, their schedules probably fill out faster than you think. Considering Michigan has seasons, it’s not always appropriate to think that the season you want will be available at the last minute. Getting yourself on the calendar well in advance will make sure that you can actually work with the photographer that you want to.
