“But I Don’t Like Myself In Pictures” is a really common objection that I get when I talk to people about photographs. I am going to share some tough love in this blog post. Please bear with me. I mean this post with all the love that I can muster. This is for my friends who don’t like yourself in pictures.
You need to get over yourself because no one cares. No one cares about how you feel when you look at pictures of yourself. Here is the tough love. If you don’t like yourself in pictures, no one cares.
Do You Need Therapy?
I don’t want this to turn into therapy, but why don’t you like pictures of yourself? Did you get hurt by a photographer 30 years ago? Is there some decision you made 20 years ago that you are struggling to live with, therefore you can’t look at yourself? Are you struggling with getting old and you see it in your pictures, therefore you don’t like your pictures? There are so many more questions that I could ask you, if you don’t like yourself in pictures, to help you realize that there is a reason you don’t like pictures and you need to get over that reason so that you can live your best life.
Warning, I’m About To Get Graphic
Let me take a moment to pause and say I don’t use swear words on my blog or on social media because I don’t want to alienate anyone who finds those words offensive. I don’t care if YOU use those words. If you use them in a funny context I actually will like you more. But I try to be as neutral as possible here. So, please, please don’t take this the wrong way. If you are offended by swear words now here is your warning to leave the blog and know that this is a one-off occurrence and it won’t happen again.
No f**ks To Give
So, here is the permission that I give you. You need to not care so much. You need to stop giving a f**k. None else gives a f**k if you don’t like yourself in pictures, unless you are Marilyn Manson and you scare small children.
We are talking about you in pictures. You need to be in pictures so you have documents of your life. It’s about collecting memories that at some point will slip away and maybe a picture will be all that you have left. So, f**k the feeling of being insecure or feeling inadequate or not feeling pretty or young enough. You need to do this for yourself and be in beautiful pictures.
